About Lilaloka

Lilaloka, meaning “the universe of Play” in Sanskrit, offers diverse activities for self-discovery and spontaneous learning through play in a safe and accepting environment where children can be themselves without competition or judgment. Collaborating with schools and parents, Lilaloka views each child as an evolving individual, focusing on their holistic development. It welcomes children of all ages and types, including those with special needs, fostering interactions that enrich everyone involved. Its mission is to become a resource center for educators to share research and experiences. Through our experience, we’ve developed a unique approach blending individual and group sessions, allowing participants to follow their inspiration and needs freely.

Individual sessions

The sessions aim to foster self-exploration and authenticity in children, allowing them to discover joy within themselves while facing challenges independently. Child-led play is central to the sessions, creating a safe and accepting atmosphere where children can express themselves freely. Facilitators support the child’s exploration without directing play or conversation, providing guidance based on the child’s needs and the moment. The only limitations are regarding responsibility and safety. In cases of socialization difficulties, reintegrating the child into group sessions occurs gradually, facilitated by established communication and respect between the child and facilitator.

Group sessions

We provide a variety of activities to empower children to explore their interests and make choices independently. These activities are centered around teamwork, where we cultivate respect for nature, each other, and our surroundings. Through collaborative play, we emphasize social skill development within a safe and supportive environment. Children are free to participate at their own pace, with no pressure to engage if they prefer to observe or pursue their own interests. Additionally, we create educational toys and games inspired by the children’s imaginations.

Activities offered

Nature theatre

Nature’s Theater was created by Anna Oijevaar and is a playground where the one becomes the many and the many become one. In Nature’s Theatre, we play with points and lines and we experience the creation of shapes. Children feel naturally attracted and have an intuitive understanding of the language of shapes, lines, and points. By introducing numbers as a quality instead of only a quantity, we make them alive.

The art space

The art space was made for our little artists to explore, create, and express themselves freely. Encouraging collaboration and social interaction, the art space invites children to work together on collaborative projects or express themselves individually. Under the guidance of our facilitators, children are encouraged to let their imagination run wild, fostering confidence and self-expression.

Yoga for teenagers

We learn a sequence of postures and then do the practice in our flow.
Besides the amazing benefits of yoga on the body and mind, my main aim in giving these sessions is to bring self-awareness to the function and ability of the body we were given.

Yoga for children

We focus on being able to feel and listen to one’s own body striving to improve on one’s flexibility, awareness and concentration. We move with stories and games using imaginary animals and nature in stories. We also use a ball for games for the smaller ones and pairing up for team work.

Story time & Drama

Storytelling, Drama, and role play. In this activity, we provide story books, hand puppets, theatre games, and dress-up props. We build houses and worlds together so the children can express thier role-play.
We read and create stories. The children make their small plays. Tise activity aims to encourage, listening, communication, and verbal expression, through self-discovery and self-expression.

Teenagers apprenticeship

Some older children felt that they very much wanted to continue to be part of Lilaloka and expressed an interest in working with children. In the past we saw that in mixed age groups there was a natural understanding and respect between the different ages of what each one’s responsibility was. Seeing how well it worked for children to teach each other we opened up for teenagers as young as 12 to come and be assistant facilitators, and sometimes these young facilitators took over the session with me becoming the assistant.

Toddlers & parents group

Our toddler groups are for parents and their children. We provide a space and activities for them to explore together introducing new sensory experiences for the toddler and a space for parents to meet and share about their parenting journey in a space for them to connect to their inner child. We also have professional advice available for parents who are dealing with obstacles in their parenting journey and would like some help.

Nature walks & cycle exploration

We take walks in the different terrains of our community while observing nature and the change of seasons, watching for animal tracks, and identifying trees, plants, rocks, and shells. Watch the change in water levels, and the different soil types, and discuss whatever topics the children bring up.

Sensory play with nature

We bring awareness to the sensations that are around us in Nature and life.

My imaginary word

In Imaginary World, the facilitator becomes part of the Imaginary play, not an observer This requires the facilitator to connect with and develop their intuitive inner child. When the children arrive, I ask them what the story plot is for today. They then chose what material to use, like figures, tools, cloth, dolls, mats, tables, toy houses, books, etc. We might have to go foraging for some ingredients in nature, incorporating life in our world and play is an amazing tool to guide children to overcome their challenges.

Discovering Medicinal plants

We learn the use of mainly local medicinal plants playfully.
The activity is based on teamwork: together we honor Mother Earth, each other, and the world around us, explore and learn how we can support each other.
We do this by exploring the land around us and learning to recognise medicinal plants that can help our body and mind to be healthy and comfortable. We learn how to prepare the remedies (the children call them magic potions).

The science room

We have a room dedicated to discovery and experiments. A child should always have space to wonder, discover, and experiment, to follow instructions or have an idea, and find their way through trial and error. In this space, the child learns to understand the relationship between elements.
One of my favorites is when the child learns that a tiny bit of something more or a tiny bit of something less can make a difference.

Games

Respect for all and of each one, responsibility for one’s actions and speech/words, autonomy on the individual and collective level, love, and sharing are essential parts of my work.

Academic support

We also offer academic support when needed through Montessori tools in a holistic integral way.

Facilitators training

Lilaloka is a resource centre where each child is seen as an evolving human being. Education research is of utmost importance as children open the way to the future. To develop new educational approaches and places for all, based on free choice, creativity, and non-judgment, is a demand expressed by many families. We offer training in different fields of our expertise. Please reach out to see which trainings are offered presently.

Parent counselling

At times, parents need support to feel heard and understood, to be guided in finding the right tools and ways to implement them, so they can support their child to grow to their full potential harmoniously and joyfully.
